PERSONALITY:
Shirotani first comes across as calm, collected, and formally polite. He exudes perfect corporate secretary. However most of these traits are only surface deep. When interacting with him more often in the workplace he can accidentally come across as rude due to his mysophobia causing him to give extreme reactions in certain cases. Frequently he will reflexively jerk away or slap away hands that touch or are about to touch him.
The calm demeanor he projects is also far from true. Internally he is constantly worrying about things. He is frequently frustrated and flustered in unfamiliar situations and panics quite a lot. He’s just learned to hide it all very well. He buries his true feelings under a mask of polite etiquette and uses excuses to limit his time in uncomfortable situations as soon as possible.
His ability to be so organized and together is more an offshoot of his OCD than true competence (not that he isn’t competent but it isn’t effortless). Since it takes so much for him to just leave his house everything he does is double and triple checked. He needs the organization to help him function and small things going out of sync can leave him struggling.
Once you get to know him break through his facade you find that Shirotani is actually quite childish and moody. He is demanding for the things he wants and can be a bit oblivious to the desires of others, at least when those desires involve himself. Due to a severe self hate he can’t see anyone wanting much from him. He constantly second guesses what people may mean when talking to him and will quickly talk himself into down playing whatever it might be.
He is quite fussy, and has a bad habit of lying to himself about his own feelings and desires. (He refuses to say he is in love with Kurose until the very end, despite obviously having feelings and an attraction from the beginning.) He can be selfish in relationships, gladly taking but not giving. (Wanting Kurose to be in his life and support him, but refusing he had any feelings for him.) And relies quite a bit on people interpreting his true thoughts and feelings rather than saying them openly. (Kurose constantly has to judge his mood and actions and read between the lines to try and do what Shirotani actually wants.)
Shirotani can easily fall into depression after situations go extremely outside what he wants. We see him unable to get out of bed for several days after Kurose tells him they will no longer see each other. This was the opposite of what he had wanted. This was also rather selfish of him as he ignored his work, his bosses concerns, and the issue happened because he wasn’t honest and had lied about his actions.
He is a bit of a masochist, actually enjoying being pushed out of his comfort zone and forced to admit to the things he can’t admit to. The fact that Kurose manages to do these things is what keeps bringing him back. It’s as if on his own he can’t allow himself to admit to his darker desires or to do anything out of his comfort zone, but when someone pushes him, it really isn’t as much of a fight as he makes it out to be. The things he truly hates he will avoid and never deal with them again.
Due to a traumatic experience when he was young Shirotani is rather sexually repressed. And views those desires as an ugly dirt inside him that might infect others. (the possible root of his mysophobia.) He mentions that he only deals with himself as much as “health requires” and refuses to agknowlege enjoyment in sex. Despite this there are small things that turn him on, such as thinking of a second hand kiss from drinking from the same bottle as Kurose as a direct kiss from him.
The more his relationship with Kurose gets sexual, the more he looks forward to the potential of physical interaction, but he won’t admit it to himself and he won’t request it. He simply reacts as if anticipating and then is mildly disappointed when it doesn’t happen. He does orchestrate some situations with the idea that they could go further, but no matter what he denies the reasoning or intent. For example, he asks Kurose to go with him to check out a restaurant for potential business meetings, it’s clear that his alterior motive was to simply go out with him, try to impress him with his attempt to eat in public and perhaps have more. It was a date in all but name. When Kurose jokes about it being a date Shirotani denies it vehemently.
